Some frequently asked questions about the cremello color...

What causes the cremello color?

A cremello horse, is a horse with two creme dilution genes and a "chestnut" base color.  A palomino is a "chestnut" horse + one creme dilution gene.  The double dilution gene causes the horse's pigment to be "lightened" twice.  A cremello does have pigment...Bryn has markings that are quite evident, including star, strip, snip (even an obvious chin snip) and two high hind stockings.

Will foals by Bryn have blue eyes?

Palomino, buckskin and smokey black foals will not have Bryn's blue eyes.  If these foals have blue eyes (or one blue eye) it is caused by a different color gene (most likely sabino) and is no more likely to be thrown by Bryn than any other sabino stallion.  Please note that it is normal for palomino, buckskin and smokey black foals to be born with blue or light grey eyes, but they will gain pigment soon.  If your mare is a single dilute (palomino, bucksin or smokey black) there is a 50% probability that she will throw a double dilute (cremello, perlino or smokey creme) when bred to Bryn.  All double dilute horses have light (generally blue, but sometimes a bit amber) eyes.

None of Bryn's foals (to date) have had blue eyes and we don't anticipate this happening.

Will I get a palomino, if I breed my grey mare to Bryn?

"Grey" is not a color.  Like the creme gene, it is a modifier.  Your grey mare has a base coat (her foaling color).  A grey horse is either heterozygous or homozygous for grey.  If a grey mare is heterozygous for grey, 50% of her foals will eventually turn grey.  If she is homozygous for grey, 100% of her foals will eventually be grey.  If she is bred to Bryn, the resulting foal will definitely be a creme dilute, but will possibly turn grey.

Please note that breeding a grey mare who has a dilute base coat (i.e. was foaled palomino/buckskin/smokey black), to another dilute (or double dilute) creates the possibility of creating a double dilute foal who will eventually go grey.  It is virtually impossible to tell if a double dilute is grey, until that "foal" has matured and produced a number of foals.  There is currently no genetic test to identify grey.

What color will the foal be, if I breed my mare to Bryn?

We are proud as can be, to feature Bryn's daughter, UTS Arabella, as our current "NEWS" feature.

"Belly" as she is affectionately called, is an amazing young Cob mare, who has just been shown to two back to back championships, two weekends in a row, in two separate types of competition.

JoAnn and Belly's accomplishments are even more special to me, as they are the result of the dreams of three different people/farms who all happen to be friends...we, at Winding Oaks Welsh, being the stallion owners, our friends the Lantes at Under The Son Farm, being the breeders, and of course JoAnn Wilson, of Hidden Lake Pony Farm, being owner, trainer and whip.

JoAnn showed "Belly" at her first official show, at the Cypress Keep Horse Driving Trial, the weekend of May 24, 2008.  They came away as the CHAMPIONS of their division!!  Way to go JoAnn and Belly!!

The following weekend, JoAnn and Belly went to their first open pleasure show and came away as GRAND CHAMPIONS!!  Not only did they win the Grand Championship, but swept their classes!  We couldn't be happier for them and look for this to be the start of a long career of performance successes.

Belly will likely be having a bit of time off, as she has been bred for 2009...we look forward to her producing another performance champion!

Congratulations to JoAnn and Belly!!
